Most cultural institutions, including proyectoamil, have been forced to pause their activities due to the current situation and to re-prioritize and re-think our content, program, efforts, and life itself. During the lockdown, we invited our friends and people closest to the institution, artists, curators, thinkers, museum and art center directors, and cultural managers to participate in Looking Forward. We requested them to send us a reflection, it could be a drawing, text of any kind, poem, recorded audio or audiovisual about what they think and feel, inspired by the moment we are living. Among the colleagues invited to share their reflections are Rosa Barba, Luz María Bedoya, Phillippe Gruenberg, Pablo Hare, Esteban Igartua, Fátima Rodrigo, Daniel Roque, Sandra Salazar, Simon Schwyzer, Richard Tuttle, Giancarlo Valverde, José Vera, among others.
The lockdown and social distancing due to the pandemic, in some cases, have accelerated changes that had already begun or that inevitably had to occur, such as remote work or adaptation to new technologies. They may have united or distanced us from our families and community depending on the conditions of quarantine and distancing; having given us time to rethink our work, daily life, relationships, and the future. But the pandemic and confinement have also generated an emotional and economic cost due to human and job losses and the feeling of an uncertain future.
We would like to understand how our colleagues face this sort of parenthesis that, despite being a very complicated moment, opens the opportunity to explore the potential of art for a radical impact and change. It gives us the space to think, reflect, and evaluate resilience and start acting to reinvent ourselves, see new ways of showing work so the crisis ends up working as a catalyst for ideas and projects.
Some of the issues that we asked our guests to think about: What do you think of online platforms to bring artists' work to audiences in confinement or social distancing? Of the experience of bringing art to the homes in a remote way? How do you see your practice in the future, post-pandemic? Galleries, museums and fairs? The amount of online content?

The Peruvian artist Philippe Gruenberg shares with us a documentary video part of his research for the HAWAPI project in Huepetuhe.

Huepetuhe is a small community in the Peruvian Amazon founded by immigrants from the southern Andes lured by its rich gold deposits. In the town live families and individuals who, amid corruption and violence, try to get ahead, at the cost of the depredation of one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. In 2015 Hawapi, a cultural association, invited a group of artists, architects, and cultural managers to develop projects and intervene in the public space, in close collaboration with people from this community.
What did Maxim Holland and his team go for? is a documentary video that, through the local news coverage about Hawapi project, questions the incorporation of contemporary art into the daily life of the community and its potential as an element of change.

Concerto for Lungs
The Peruvian artist Luz María Bedoya shares with us her reflection along with a binaural recorded video of 53 seconds, so she invites us to use headphones.
In the early days of Peru’s mandatory quarantine following the onset of COVID-19, while the city of Lima was blanketed in tense silence, I noticed a strange noise, like crackling charcoal, coming from the kitchen. When I went to see what it was, I encountered a small transparent trash bag held by a metal support on top of a low wall, its plastic backlit against the sun. The door to the backyard behind the kitchen was open, and the air that blew in was inflating the bag. As if in spasms, it swelled and then emptied in a trancelike process that created an almost pulmonary kind of music. What does a bag have to say? What does it show us? What traces does it leave behind? Something in the incongruity of its windy, plastic voice seemed to dissipate the statistical knowledge of all the experts ceaselessly opening in the media during the pandemic, whose sweeping calculus proved unable to put a number to the loss or prevent that which was imminent.

The last few months have been proof that anything can happen. In this time my and my peers spend a lot of time inward reflecting on what it is we live in. This aspect alone has been enriching. We have to find ourselves and touch base with our inner voice.

I am enclosing this image of a colored pencil drawing that I worked on during the early days of the pandemic here in the UK. When we were more scared and in a certain way happy to be locked in the house ... About what all this implies for the future, it is difficult for me to think anything very clear. It depends on many situations that are out of my control. I suppose there is also going to be a difficulty coming back from a rather extreme routine change.

Giancarlo Valverde is a visual artist from Lima, he shares with us his reflection, it includes five photos and a text. Giancarlo is currently participating in Haciendo Contexto IV, our contemporary art lab for young upcoming artists.
I migrated from Ica to Lima in mid-2008 to study architecture, but years later I switched to Visual Art, a degree from which I graduated two years ago. But at the beginning of the first 15 days of quarantine due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I went through the conflict of returning to my city to spend the number of days of quarantine established by the government and its subsequent extensions. Currently, I have a job, which is an income for me, but it is an enigma to find out if the next semester I will continue teaching or I will be considered because unlike other teachers I have only been at this institution for 1 year. And also, the reaction of students (of schools, institutes and universities) from all over Peru to the virtualization of education is indeterminate, which at first had an economic rejection related to the prices of the fees on the payment slips, due to this type of service.
On the other hand, I continue teaching from my parents' house in my city, accompanied by "Atila" (my dog). We are both spectators of all the reforms of different sectors due to the coronavirus with its "phases" for the economic reactivation of the country, but with an unreal flavor linked to the number of infected and dead. It is as if each phase is a different "mask" that the state uses to keep the lungs of the economy from being affected by the pandemic. However, artistic education in Peru has not been specifically discussed. It is interesting to think that the artists who teach are now part of a slow process of virtualized teaching that had already been abandoned by the Peruvian state for years.

La mayoría de instituciones culturales, incluido proyectoamil, nos hemos visto forzadas a pausar nuestras actividades debido a la coyuntura actual, repriorizar y repensar nuestros contenidos, programa, esfuerzos y la vida misma. Durante la cuarentena invitamos a nuestros amigos artistas, curadores, pensadores, directores de museos y centros de arte, y gestores culturales a participar de Mirando hacia adelante / En espera de.... Les pedimos que nos envíen una reflexión, podía ser desde un dibujo, texto de cualquier tipo, poema, hasta algo grabado en audio o audiovisual acerca de lo que piensan y sienten sobre, y a partir de, el momento que nos ha tocado vivir. Entre los colegas invitados a compartir sus reflexiones están Rosa Barba, Luz María Bedoya, Phillippe Gruenberg, Pablo Hare, Esteban Igartua, Fátima Rodrigo, Daniel Roque, Sandra Salazar, Simon Schwyzer, Richard Tuttle, Giancarlo Valverde, José Vera, entre otros.
El encierro y distanciamiento debido a la pandemia, en algunos casos, han acelerado cambios que habían ya comenzado o que, ineludiblemente, se tenían que dar, como el trabajo remoto o la adaptación a nuevas tecnologías. Pueden habernos unido o distanciado de nuestras familias y comunidad, dependiendo de las condiciones de cuarentena y distanciamiento; habernos dado un tiempo para repensar nuestro trabajo, vida diaria, relaciones y el futuro; pero la pandemia y el encierro también han generado un costo emocional y económico debido a las perdidas humanas, de empleo y la sensación de un futuro incierto.
En este momento difícil quisiéramos entender cómo enfrentan esta suerte de paréntesis que, a pesar de ser un momento muy complicado, abre la oportunidad para explorar el potencial del arte para un impacto y cambio radical. Nos da el espacio para pensar, reflexionar y evaluar la capacidad de resiliencia y empezar a actuar para reinventarse, ver nuevas maneras de mostrar el trabajo y que la crisis termine funcionando como catalizador de ideas y proyectos.
Algunas de las interrogantes que les planteamos a los invitados: ¿Qué piensas de las plataformas online para llevar el trabajo de los artistas a audiencias en confinamiento o distanciamiento social? ¿De la experiencia de llevar el arte a casa de manera remota? ¿Cómo ves tu práctica en el futuro, pos pandemia? ¿Las galerías, los museos y las ferias? ¿La cantidad de contenido online?

El artista peruano Philippe Gruenberg, comparte con nosotros un video documental parte de su investigación para el proyecto HAWAPI en Huepetuhe.

Huepetuhe es una pequeña comunidad en la Amazonia peruana fundada por inmigrantes provenientes del sur andino, atraídos por sus ricos yacimientos de oro. En el pueblo viven familias e individuos que, en medio de la corrupción y la violencia, tratan de salir adelante, a costa de la depredación de uno de los ecosistemas de mayor diversidad biológica del planeta. En el 2015 la asociación cultural Hawapi invito a un grupo de artistas, arquitectos y operadores culturales a desarrollar proyectos e intervenir el espacio publico en colaboración cercana con gente de esta comunidad.
¿Qué es lo que fueron a hacer Maxim Holland y su elenco? Es un video documental que a través de la cobertura que el noticiero local le da al proyecto Hawapi, abre la pregunta por la incorporación del arte contemporáneo a la vida cotidiana de la comunidad y su potencial como elemento de cambio.

Concierto para pulmones
La artista peruana Luz María Bedoya, comparte con nosotros su reflexión acompañada de un video de 53 segundos de sonido binaural, por lo que nos invita a oírlo con audífonos.
Durante los primeros días de la cuarentena impuesta en el Perú a causa del Covid 19, mientras un silencio tenso cubría la ciudad de Lima, oí un ruido extraño que llegaba de la cocina parecido al sonido de brasas quemándose. Cuando me acerqué a ver lo que ocurría encontré la transparencia a contraluz de una pequeña bolsa plástica de basura, sostenida por un soporte metálico sobre un muro bajo. La puerta del patio tras la cocina estaba abierta y el aire que ingresaba llenaba aquella bolsa que, como en espasmos, se hinchaba y se vaciaba, haciendo en ese trance una música casi pulmonar. ¿Qué dice una bolsa? ¿Qué apunta? ¿Cómo marca? Algo en la incongruencia de su voz plástica y ventosa parecía desvanecer el saber estadístico de todas las palabras expertas transmitidas sin tregua por los medios de comunicación en el actual contexto de la pandemia, que en su cálculo generalizado no alcanzaban para cifrar la pérdida ni prevenir lo inminente.

Los últimos meses han sido la prueba de que cualquier cosa puede pasar. En este tiempo mis compañeros y yo pasamos mucho tiempo reflexionando sobre lo que vivimos. Este aspecto por sí mismo ha sido enriquecedor. Tenemos que encontrarnos a nosotros mismos y contactar con nuestra voz interior.

Adjunto esta imagen de un dibujo a lápiz de color en el que estuve trabajando durante los primeros días de la pandemia, aquí en el Reino Unido. Cuando estábamos más asustados y en cierta forma contentos de estar encerrados en la casa... Sobre lo que implica todo esto para el futuro se me hace difícil pensar nada muy claro. Depende de muchas situaciones que están fuera de mi control. Supongo que también va a haber una dificultad para regresar de un cambio de rutina bastante extremo.

Giancarlo Valverde, artista visual residente en Lima, comparte con nosotros su reflexión compuesta por cinco fotografías y un texto. Actualmente Giancarlo participa en Haciendo Contexto IV, nuestro laboratorio de arte contemporáneo para jóvenes artistas emergentes.
Migré de Ica a Lima a mediados de 2008 para estudiar arquitectura, pero años después me cambié a Arte Visuales, carrera de la cual egresé hace dos años. Pero al iniciarse los primeros 15 días de cuarentena por la pandemia de Covid-19 atravesé por el conflicto de retornar a mi ciudad para pasar la cantidad de días de cuarentena establecidos por el gobierno y sus posteriores ampliaciones. Actualmente, tengo trabajo, lo cual me es un ingreso, pero es un enigma saber si el otro ciclo seguiré enseñando o me tomarán en cuenta, porque a diferencia de otros docentes yo recién llevo 1 año en esta institución. Y también, es indeterminada la reacción de los estudiantes (de colegio, institutos y universidades) de todo el Perú ante la virtualización de la educación, que en un principio tuvo un rechazo economicista relacionado con los precios de las cuotas en las boletas de pago, debido a este tipo de servicio.
Por otro lado, continúo enseñando desde casa de mis padres en mi ciudad, acompañado de “Atila” (mi perra). Ambos somos espectadores de todas las reformas de diferentes sectores por el coronavirus con sus “fases” para reactivación económica del país, pero con un sabor irreal vinculado con la cantidad de contagiados y muertos. Es como si cada fase sea una “mascarilla” diferente que usa el estado para no dejar afectar los pulmones de la economía por la pandemia. Sin embargo, no se ha discutido de manera especifica la educación artística en el Perú. Es interesante pensar que los artistas que ejercen docencia forman ahora parte de un proceso lento de una enseñanza virtualizada que ya llevaba años en abandono por el estado peruano.
