For the fourteenth edition of AMIL- Art Sessions, Elena Tejada-Herrera invites people who identify themselves as women to a self-defence training session, followed by a conversation with the artist. With an alternative and underground character, Tejada-Herrera's work has focused on the creation of conceptual and formal structures for the collective and creative participation of the public. These pieces–to which the artist refers as “cultural exchanges”–condition and facilitate a critical posture by the audience, while providing platforms for the performance and implementation of socio-cultural dynamics alternative to those established in the framework of patriarchal-capitalist society. After the self-defence training, the artist will present her most recent projects and share with the public some reflections on how to sustain a critical artistic language that is not subjected to the forces of the market.
Admission to the self-defence training session is free, but access is restricted to women or people who identify themselves as such. The artist's talk is open to the general public.
AMIL- Art Sessions is a series of monthly encounters at Proyecto AMIL aimed to expand artistic and curatorial practice beyond the temporal and spatial limitations of exhibition making. Throughout this series Proyecto AMIL seeks to promote alternative ways to talk about and experience contemporary art; as well as create a platform for exchange between artists, curators, researchers and our local audience.
Elena Tejada-Herrera (Lima, 1969) is a transdisciplinary and feminist artist. She produces hybrid, participatory and interactive artworks, where the public becomes a creative collaborator. In 2018 Proyecto AMIL published the catalogue Elena Tejada-Herrera. Videos of this woman: performance documentation 1997-2010, on the occasion of her homonymous exhibition. She has had solo shows in Peru, United States, France and Spain. She has received scholarships and participated in residences in institutions such as: La Cite Internationale Des Arts, Vermont Studio Center, Atlantic Center for the Arts, Centro Fundación Telefónica Lima and Urra-Argentina. Awards and recognitions received include: James Nelson Raymond Fellowship (USA, 2013); Grand Prix at the Parnu XIII International Film & Video Festival "Best AV action piece" (Estonia, 2007); best video choreography at Lucksuz Festival of Cheap Fim (Slovenia, 2004); mention for best experimental work at the Virginia Center for Contemporary Art (USA, 2004); award for best video project in Werkleitz Gesellschaft (Germany, 2000); first place in Pasaporte para un Artista (Lima, 1999).

Para la decimocuarta edición de AMIL- sesiones de arte, Elena Tejada-Herrera invita a las personas que se identifican a sí mismas como mujeres a una sesión de entrenamiento de defensa personal, la cual será seguida por una conversación con la artista. Con un carácter alternativo y underground, el trabajo de Tejada-Herrera se ha enfocado en la creación de estructuras conceptuales y formales para la participación colectiva y creativa del público. Estas piezas –a las que la artista describe como “intercambios culturales”– condicionan y facilitan una postura crítica por parte de la audiencia, al mismo tiempo que brindan plataformas para la ejecución y puesta en práctica de dinámicas socioculturales alternativas a las establecidas en el marco de la sociedad patriarcal-capitalista. Luego del entrenamiento de autodefensa, la artista presentará sus proyectos más recientes y compartirá con el público algunas reflexiones en torno a cómo sostener un lenguaje artístico critico y no sometido a las fuerzas del mercado.
La entrada a la sesión de entrenamiento de defensa personal es libre, pero el acceso es restringido a mujeres o personas que se identifiquen como tales. Es importante ser puntuales. La charla de la artista es abierta al público en general.
AMIL- sesiones de arte es una serie de encuentros mensuales cuyo objetivo es expandir la práctica artística y curatorial más allá de las limitaciones temporales y espaciales de la exposición. A través de esta serie, Proyecto AMIL busca promover formas alternativas de pensar, hablar y experimentar el arte contemporáneo; así como proveer de una plataforma para el intercambio entre artistas, curadores, investigadores y nuestra audiencia.
Elena Tejada-Herrera (Lima, 1969) es una artista transdisciplinaria y feminista. Realiza obras de arte hibrido, participativas e interactivas donde el público se convierte en colaborador creativo. En el 2018 Proyecto AMIL publicó el libro Elena Tejada-Herrera. Videos de esta mujer: registros de performance 1997-2010, a propósito de la exhibición del mismo nombre. Ha expuesto su trabajo de forma individual en Perú, Estados Unidos, Francia y España. Ha recibido becas y participado en residencias en instituciones como: La Cite Internationale Des Arts, Vermont Studio Center, Atlantic Center for the Arts, Centro Fundación Telefónica Lima y Urra-Argentina. Entre los premios y reconocimientos recibidos figuran: James Nelson Raymond Fellowship (EEUU, 2013); Grand Prix en el Parnu XIII International Film & Video Festival "Best AV action piece" (Estonia, 2007); mejor video coreografía Lucksuz Festival de Cheap Fim (Eslovenia, 2004); mención por mejor obra experimental en el Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Virginia, (EEUU, 2004); premio por mejor proyecto de video en Werkleitz Gesellschaft (Alemania, 2000); primer puesto en Pasaporte para un Artista (Lima,1999).
