For the fifth edition of AMIL- Art Sessions, Proyecto AMIL's artist in residency –Rosa Barba– will discuss the work in progress Inside Aggregate States of Matters; a film that she is currently shooting in Peru that will be released in May this year in the context of the exhibition Time, Forward! at the V-A-C Zattere in Venice. In conversation with curator Jose Carlos Mariátegui, Barba, who has consistently pushed the boundaries of film by exploring its spatiotemporal dimension and experimenting with time-based forms, will reflect on her work methodology and give an overview of some of her more recent projects. The talk will be followed by the screening of two short films by the artist: Somnium (2011) (18:20 min) and The Empirical Effect (2010) (22 min).
AMIL- Art Sessions is a series of monthly encounters at Proyecto AMIL aimed to expand artistic and curatorial practice beyond the temporal and spatial limitations of exhibition making. Throughout this series Proyecto AMIL seeks to promote alternative ways to talk about and experience contemporary art; as well as create a platform for exchange between artists, curators, researchers and our local audience.
Rosa Barba (Agrigento,1972) lives and works in Berlin. She has a sculptural approach to film and the ways it articulates space, placing the work and the viewer in a new relationship. Her works encompass films, sculptures, installations, text pieces, and publications grounded in the material and conceptual qualities of cinema. Barba interrogates the industry of cinema with respect to various forms of staging, such as gesture, genre, information and documents, taking them out of the context in which they are normally seen and reshaping and representing them anew. She studied at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and completed her PhD in Fine Arts at the Malmö Art Academy in 2018. Her work is part of numerous public and private collections and was awarded various renowned prizes. Barba has exhibited in internationally acclaimed institutions and took part in recent biennales in São Paulo, Venice, and Berlin.
José-Carlos Mariátegui (Lima, 1975) is a writer, curator and entrepreneur in culture and technology. He studied Biology and received his BSc in Applied Mathematics, he holds both Masters and Doctoral degrees in Information Systems and Innovation from the London School of Economics and Political Science - LSE (London). Dr. Mariátegui is the founder of Alta Tecnología Andina – ATA, a project devoted to creativity, technology and innovation in Latin America. He is currently an Advisory Board member of the Bicentenary of the Independence of Peru, Editorial Board member for Leonardo Books at MIT Press, Advisory Board member for AI & Society (UK) and member of the Board of Trustees at MALI - el Museo de Arte de Lima. He is the co-editor with M. Hernandez and J. Villacorta of The future was now: 21 years of video and electronic art in Peru (2018). He has published in journals such as Third Text, The Information Society, Telos and Leonardo and worked on projects on art, science and technology for more than two decades.

Para la quinta edición de AMIL-sesiones de arte, Rosa Barba – artista en residencia de Proyecto AMIL – discutirá el trabajo en curso para Dentro de estados de la materia agregados; película que actualmente está rodando en el Perú y que se estrenará en mayo de este año en el contexto de la exposición Time, Forward! en el V-A-C Zattere en Venecia. En diálogo con el curador José Carlos Mariátegui, Barba –quien siempre ha empujado los límites del cine al explorar su dimensión espacio-temporal y experimentar con formatos temporales– reflexionará sobre su metodología de trabajo y revisará algunos de sus proyectos más recientes. Después de la charla, que se llevará a cabo en inglés, se proyectarán dos cortometrajes de la artista: Somnium (2011) (18:20 min) y The Empirical Effect (2010) (22 min).
AMIL- sesiones de arte es una serie de encuentros mensuales cuyo objetivo es expandir la práctica artística y curatorial más allá de las limitaciones temporales y espaciales de la exposición. A través de esta serie, Proyecto AMIL busca promover formas alternativas de pensar, hablar y experimentar el arte contemporáneo; así como proveer de una plataforma para el intercambio entre artistas, curadores, investigadores y nuestra audiencia.
Rosa Barba (Agrigento, 1972) vive y trabaja en Berlín. Entiende el cine y las formas en las que articula el espacio desde un enfoque escultórico, colocando su trabajo y al espectador en una nueva relación. Sus obras abarcan diversos formatos, tales como: películas, esculturas, instalaciones, textos y publicaciones; todos ellos basados en las cualidades materiales y conceptuales del cine. La artista interroga la industria del cine a través de varias formas de escenificación, como el gesto, el género, la información y los documentos; sacándolos del contexto en el que normalmente se les ve para representarlos nuevamente. Estudió en la Academia de Artes de los Medios de Colonia y completó su doctorado en Bellas Artes en la Academia de Arte de Malmö en 2018. Su trabajo forma parte de numerosas colecciones públicas y privadas y recibió varios premios y reconocimientos. Barba ha expuesto en instituciones de renombre internacional y ha participado en las bienales de São Paulo, Venecia y Berlín.
José-Carlos Mariátegui (Lima, 1975) es escritor, curador y emprendedor en cultura y tecnología. Estudió Biología y es Bachiller en Matemáticas Aplicadas por la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (Lima). Tiene una Maestría (MSc) y Doctorado (PhD) en Sistemas de Información e Innovación, ambos por la London School of Economics and Political Science – LSE (Londres). Fundador de Alta Tecnología Andina – ATA, dedicada al desarrollo de proyectos en arte, ciencia y tecnología en América Latina. Miembro del Comité Consultivo del Bicentenario de la Independencia del Perú, del Comité Editorial de la Leonardo Series, libros sobre arte, ciencia y tecnología publicados por MIT Press (USA), del Advisory Board de AI & Society (UK) y miembro de Consejo Directivo del Museo de Arte de Lima - MALI. Recientemente ha co-editado con M. Hernández y J. Villacorta El mañana fue hoy 21 años de videocreación y arte electrónico en el Perú (2018). Ha publicado en revistas tales como Third Text, The Information Society, Telos y Leonardo y ha trabajado en proyectos de arte, ciencia y tecnología por más de dos décadas.
