Proyecto AMIL and the artists Martin Gustavsson and Rodrigo Gómez Olivos are pleased to launch nationally its open call to art students and self-taught artists, to be part of the Collaborative Laboratory of Contemporary Art: HACIENDO CONTEXTO II.
The Escuela de Pintura Cuzqueña serves as thematic backdrop for this year’s laboratory: The school was founded in 1534, after the Spanish conquest, and it is considered the first artistic center that systematically taught European artistic techniques in the Americas. The Cuzqueña paintings were a form of religious art whose main purpose was to convert the Incas to Catholicism. However, soon they became a space for cultural syncretism and symbolic resistance for the Andean worldview.
With a clear focus on art making, throughout the laboratory the Escuela de Pintura Cuzqueña will function as a starting point to reflect and discuss the ways in which colonialism impacts contemporary artist production and how to deal with this legacy from the present.
The collaborative work can take many routes depending on the dynamics and interests of each of the artists in the group. The goal is to build a network and explore the different forms of art making together.
It is essential that the participants commit to the laboratory in terms of time and effort. Proyecto AMIL will cover the domestic flights, accommodation and expenses of the artists coming from Peruvian cities outside of Lima.
PROGRAM
Week 1 - Presentation of portfolios and discussion about the current artistic production in the local and international context
Week 2 - Visits to museums, exhibitions and interviews with curators and professional artists
Week 3 - Production week
Week 4 - Public presentation of HACIENDO CONTEXTO II at Proyecto AMIL
About the Artists
Martin Gustavsson (Sweden, 1964) lives and works in London and Stockholm. Gustavsson attended The Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm, Sweden and Middlesex University, UK. His works have been exhibited in Scandinavia, the UK, Japan, US, and the Middle East. Recent solo exhibitions include: El Mirage (2015), Participant Inc., New York; Indentations (2013), Maria Stenfors, London; In No Particular Order (2010), Maria Stenfors, London, Gothenburg Museum of Art, Sweden; Wrath of God (2007-2008), Oslo Kunstforening, Norway and Brändström & Stene, Stockholm. He is newly appointed Senior Lecturer of painting at Konstfack in Stockholm, Sweden, and held the IASPIS residencies in New York (1999-2000) and Stockholm (2007).
Rodrigo Gómez Olivos (Chile, 1986) is a self-taught artist self-exiled in Lima. Some of his latest projects include: He ahí la ejecución, Proyecto AMIL (2017); Acúnandote of Sick! Proyecto AMIL y los artistas Martín Gustavsson y Rodrigo Gómez Olivos se complacen en lanzar la convocatoria nacional dirigida a estudiantes de arte y artistas autodidactas para formar parte del Laboratorio colaborativo de arte contemporáneo HACIENDO CONTEXTO II.
La Escuela de Pintura Cuzqueña servirá como eje temático para el laboratorio de este año: la escuela que fue fundada después de la conquista española en 1534, es considerada el primer centro artístico que sistemáticamente enseñó técnicas artísticas europeas en el continente americano. Si bien la Escuela Cuzqueña es una forma de arte religioso, cuyo objetivo principal fue convertir a los incas al catolicismo, pronto se convirtió en un espacio de sincretismo cultural y resistencia simbólica para la cosmovisión andina.
Con un claro enfoque en la creación artística, a lo largo del laboratorio se recurrirá a la Escuela de Pintura Cuzqueña como punto de partida para reflexionar y debatir sobre las formas en que el colonialismo impacta la producción de arte contemporáneo y cómo lidiar con este legado en el presente.
El trabajo colaborativo puede tomar muchas rutas dependiendo de la dinámica y los intereses de cada uno de los artistas del grupo. El objetivo es construir una red de colaboración y explorar las diferentes formas de hacer arte juntos.
Es esencial que los participantes se comprometan con el laboratorio en términos de tiempo y esfuerzo. Proyecto AMIL cubrirá los vuelos, gastos y hospedaje de los artistas que vienen de provincia.

Sobre los artistas
Martin Gustavsson (Suecia, 1964) vive y trabaja entre Londres y Estocolmo. Gustavsson asistió a la Royal University College of Fine Arts en Suecia y a la Universidad de Middlesex en Reino Unido. Sus obras han sido expuestas en Escandinavia, el Reino Unido, Japón, EE. UU. y Medio Oriente. Sus exposiciones individuales recientes incluyen: El Mirage (2015), Participant Inc., Nueva York; Indentations (2013), Maria Stenfors, Londres; In No Particular Order (2010), Maria Stenfors, Londres, Museo de Arte de Gotemburgo, Suecia; Wrath of God (2007-2008), Oslo Kunstforening, Noruega y Brändström & Stene, Estocolmo. Recientemente fue nombrado profesor titular de pintura en Konstfack en Estocolmo, Suecia, y completó las residencias del IASPIS en Nueva York (1999-2000) y Estocolmo (2007).
Rodrigo Gómez Olivos (Chile, 1986) es un artista autodidacta y autoexiliado en Lima. Algunos de sus proyectos más recientes incluyen: He ahí la ejecución (2017), Proyecto AMIL; Acúnandote de Sick!
