Sergio Zevallos - The Obscene Death, presents two series of drawings by Zevallos, made during the formation of Grupo Chaclacayo (1982-1995), one of the most daring collective experiments that emerged in Peru in the 1980s.
Grupo Chaclacayo — the German Helmut Psotta (Bottrop, 1937 Wesel, † 2012), and the Peruvians Raúl Avellaneda (Lima, 1960) and Sergio Zevallos (Lima, 1962)— has been an elusive presence and tales of the group have circulated as myths, both due to the scarcity of literature on their work, and the self-imposed exile of its members, who left Peru to live in Germany in 1989. Since then, knowledge of the group moved through rumors associated with the controversies sparked by their work, and certain contemporary positions and commentaries in the press that sought to dismiss and reject the way that the group addressed violence by a disturbing abjection in a male-dominated, misogynistic and homophobic society.
The two series of drawings exhibited here are based on various graphic material sourced from the city of Lima during the 1980s: prayer cards, press photos, pornographic magazines, cartoons and comics. Roses (1982) and Cause your flesh is the new born sky (1983) are representations of fantasies of pleasure and pain, colliding obscenity and brutality, religious myths and military cults, androgynous figures and scenes of bleeding. Both series show endless, entwined bodies, transforming religious ecstasy and sexual dissidence in critical traces to re-read social violence and colonial history, indirectly reflecting the first images of terror associated with the beginning of the internal armed conflict between the Maoist organization Shining Path and the Peruvian state. These drawings are one of the most startling testimonies of that decade.
Sergio Zevallos - The Obscene Death marks a return of these works to Lima after more than 30 years, since being originally exhibited at the Lima Art Museum in 1984, and then remaining in Berlin from 1989 until today. The book that accompanies this exhibition includes the addition of the series Altars (1985), and Blood and Ashes. Variations around the flag (1987), with the intent of providing a comprehensive overview of the complex and intense graphic works by Zevallos during 1980s, that remain relatively unknown to this day.

Sergio Zevallos. La Muerte Obscena presenta dos series tempranas de dibujos de Zevallos, realizadas como parte de la experiencia del Grupo Chaclacayo (1982-1994), uno de los experimentos colectivos más arriesgados surgidos en el Perú en los años 80.
La obra del Grupo Chaclacayo –el alemán Helmut Psotta (Bottrop, 1937 - † Wesel, 2012), y los peruanos Raúl Avellaneda (Lima, 1960) y Sergio Zevallos (Lima, 1962)– ha sido escasamente vista y los relatos sobre el colectivo han circulado como un mito debido a la escasez de bibliografía sobre su trabajo y al autoexilio de sus integrantes, quienes dejaron el Perú para vivir en Alemania en 1989. Desde entonces las historias del grupo fueron conocidas a través de rumores asociados a las polémicas que su obra despertó, e incluso ciertas posiciones y comentarios en la prensa intentaron desestimar y perseguir la manera en que el grupo abordó la violencia desde una abyección perturbadora en una sociedad machista, misógina y homofóbica.
Las dos series de dibujos aquí exhibidas toman como referente diversos materiales impresos que circulaban en Lima en los años 80: estampitas religiosas, fotografías de prensa, revistas pornográficas, historietas y cómics. Rosas (1982) y Que tu carne es el cielo recién nacido (1983) son fantasías de placer y dolor en donde se fusionan la obscenidad y la brutalidad, el martirio religioso y cultos militares, personajes andróginos y escenas de desangramiento. Ambas series presentan un sinfín de cuerpos entrelazados, convirtiendo el éxtasis místico y la insumisión sexual en huellas críticas desde donde leer la violencia social y la historia colonial, reflejando indirectamente las primeras imágenes del horror asociadas al surgimiento del conflicto armado interno entre la organización maoísta Sendero Luminoso y el Estado Peruano. Estos dibujos son así uno de los testimonios visuales más sobrecogedores de aquella década.
Sergio Zevallos. La Muerte Obscena presenta en Lima, luego de más de 30 años, dos series exhibidas inicialmente en el Museo de Arte de Lima en 1984, las cuales habían permanecido en Berlín desde 1989 hasta hoy. La exposición está acompañada de un libro que, además de las obras exhibidas, incluye dos series de dibujos adicionales: Altares (1985) y Sangre y Ceniza. Variaciones en torno a la bandera (1987), ofreciendo así, por primera vez, un panorama completo de la compleja y penetrante producción gráfica de Zevallos durante los años 80, hasta hoy escasamente conocida.
